Behind the Scenes: Sam Heughan – Global Brand Ambassador

In July we were proud to announce that actor Sam Heughan, the star of the hit international series, Outlander, had become our first Global Brand Ambassador. Born in Galloway, close to where our founder John Barbour was born, Sam’s Scottish roots and his love of the outdoors made him the perfect choice.

On 12 July, the Barbour team headed to the beautiful Wytham Abbey, a privately owned manor house situated in the village of Wytham just outside Oxford to do our first photoshoot with Sam for our Autumn Winter 16 Shirt Department.

The day was split into two with our media partner, leading men’s lifestyle magazine GQ taking shots of Sam in the morning for their October issue and our team taking shots in the afternoon. These shots, previewed here, will be seen in all of our retail stores, online and in selected stockists this autumn.

Sam was pictured in four different shirts from our Autumn Winter 16 Shirt Department showcasing a choice of styles and colours from casual checks to the smarter Oxford.

Each was photographed in a different setting with two of the images taken indoors in Wytham Abbey and two with Sam walking in the grounds.

No shoot would be complete without a dog and we were lucky to have Forest on set, a beautiful chocolate Labrador who adored Sam and behaved impeccably throughout the day.

Photoshoots can be very long days. Attention to detail is important - each shot can take up to an hour to set up and shoot. As well as the creative director, photography and lighting teams, there’s a stylist, hair and grooming artist for Sam to ensure that every shot is the best it can be. As well as the photos, Sam also recorded a short film talking about his childhood growing up in Scotland, how he got into acting and what it means to him to be the first Global Brand Ambassador for Barbour.
