We spoke to the Managing Director David Morgan-Hewitt and Head Concierge John Andrews, who gave us their top tips on what to do and see with the family in London.
What treats can families look forward to at The Goring before or after a long day of exploring the capital?
“On arrival at The Goring, younger guests will find a famous Goring cuddly Bar-baa-raa sheep of their own as well as a ‘For Kids’ Eyes Only’ pack with a ‘Goring Passport’ to keep a personal record of their stay and to collect stamps from each area of the hotel. There is even a Goring Bedtime Story Library which stocks books for all ages.”
What in the hotel brings to life its family heritage and ownership?
“The Goring is the only luxury hotel in London that is still owned and run by the family that built it and this family ancestry is evident throughout the hotel - from the silhouettes of the four generations of Gorings on the William Edwards china, to the hand-painted wallpaper in the new Front Hall.
The Goring is well-known for its life-size sheep placed all around the hotel – a wonderful example of how each Goring owner has added to the character of the hotel. In this instance - Mr George Goring was once given a black life-size sheep named Barbara who everyone at the hotel loved so much, he decided to order a whole flock of sheep. George would say to guests that if they wake up with a sheep by their bed, they would know that not only were they in London, but they were at The Goring.”
Could you recommend any hidden sights and secrets that families can visit near The Goring?
“London is a treasure chest of hidden gems and those within reach of The Goring are definitely worth a visit.
First stop is The Natural History Museum in South Kensington - it’s always a huge favourite with kids, housing models of life-size dinosaur and the skeletons of earth’s biggest mammals.
Other hidden gems include The Royal Mews that displays the Queen’s personal collection of carriages and vehicles as well as exhibitions held at the Tate Britain in nearby Pimlico.”

What would be the ideal family day out in London?
“For guests staying at The Goring, the perfect family day out would start with a visit to Buckingham Palace – only a 15 minute-walk from the hotel followed by a picnic lunch in St James Park, provided by The Goring.
The afternoon can be spent visiting other London landmarks including the much-loved Tower of London or alternatively, families can venture back to the hotel for Afternoon Tea in The Goring’s delightful garden. Evenings can be enjoyed with an early dinner in The Goring’s Dining Room followed by a show-stopping performance of Billy Elliot at Victoria Palace Theatre.”
