The Beaufort 40th Anniversary

This year, the iconic Beaufort Wax Jacket celebrates its 40th anniversary. Designed by Dame Margaret Barbour and first introduced into the range in 1983, this jacket is one of Barbour’s signature styles, worn by country lovers and city dwellers alike, and remains a classic.

This iconic jacket sits at the heart of our Evergreen Icons range, celebrating classic wax jackets' enduring style. The Beaufort, Bedale, Border, Ashby and Beadnell jackets are purposeful, practical and timeless styles. Through our Wax for Life re-waxing and repairs services, the life of these jackets can be further extended, so that you can keep your faithful companion for longer.

Limited Edition Beaufort

To celebrate this landmark, we have produced a 40th anniversary limited edition of the Beaufort. Made in South Shields and with all the features of the original jacket, it has a covetable back neck label marking the 40th anniversary and studs engraved with Beaufort 40.

Available in the original colours of sage, navy and olive, this special edition incorporates the tradition and heritage of the original Beaufort jacket with a simple contemporary touch.

“Back in 1983, the Beaufort was a new style of jacket that had not really been seen before. I designed it as a multi-purpose jacket that was immensely practical and functional. It was very successful straight away. I also designed it in navy and it became very popular on the high street. It was what people were looking for.”

- Dame Margaret Barbour DBE DL Chairman

Celebrating an icon

"Having worked in fashion my whole life, I am drawn to pieces that you wear and that do not wear you. Are not defined by trend. And things that will last and get better over time."

- Clare Richardson, Stylist

"The Beaufort is a style icon, my Dad wore it in the 80s, I then first wore it in the 00s. It culturally resonated very differently for each of us despite being the same garment. Timeless and democratic a thing of beauty and self-expression."

- Charlie Casely-Hayford, Designer

"When I think of Barbour I think of Britishness, practicality and style."

- Fei 'Mr Slowboy' Wang, Illustrator

"Fashion is fun and people wear clothes to show who they are. You can still love fashion in a responsible way, by buying clothes made to last."

- Zinnia Kumar, Model & Ecologist

Meet the jackets

THE BEDALE

First introduced by our Chairman Dame Margaret Barbour in 1980, the Bedale jacket's original purpose was to cater to the equestrian market - the shorter length is ideal for riding. Named after a rural town in North Yorkshire, this jacket had become a well-loved style for city and country dwellers alike.

THE BEADNELL

This ladies jacket has a slim-fit style, and is based on the iconic Bedale. Introduced to the range in 2010, this jacket has become a huge hit with its distinctive feminine silhouette. Named after a small fishing village in Northumberland, it has all the traditional features of a classic Barbour jacket.

THE BEAUFORT

At the centre of our Evergreen Icons range is the Beaufort jacket, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Coming into the range in 1983 as a sporting jacket, the design was inspired by Chairman Dame Margaret's visits to Frane where sporting jackets had features galore. The name pays homage to the continental style.

THE BORDER

Recognisable as a longer-length style, the Border jacket is the perfect all-weather coat, particularly if you're tall. Ideal for wearing over a suit, this bestselling style has a generous fit and longer sleeves, with the option to add a hood. The iconic style was designed by our Chairman Dame Margaret Barbour in the early 1980s.

THE ASHBY

One of our well-loved styles is the Ashby, an updated take on the Bedale jacket. First introduced in 2011, this jacket quickly became a part of our classics range. The main differentiator with the Ashby is its tailored silhouette for a slimmer look than the Bedale. Style, modern and perfect for all-year-round wear.
