Introducing the Custom Barbour x Land Rover Defender

Barbour x Land Rover Defender
31st aUGUST 2017
Barbour and Land Rover – two iconic British brands renowned for their all-weather resilience clothing and all-terrain vehicles. The partnership is built on a shared foundation of capability, design reliability and style. The result has been a range of men’s apparel collaboratively designed and developed by two great British brands forming the ‘Barbour for Land Rover’ collection.
To celebrate the launch of the collection, Barbour and Land Rover have collaborated on a one off customised Barbour Defender vehicle which encompasses the very best design features of both brands.
Barbour x Defender
The design of the exclusive Barbour Defender began with Jaguar Land Rover Classic meeting Gary Janes, Barbour’s Design Manager in South Shields to find out more about the history and heritage of Barbour.
The vehicle was then sourced by Jaguar Land Rover Classic. The Barbour Defender started its conversion as a Defender 90 XS Station Wagon.  It was built on the 17th November 2015, just weeks before the end of production of the iconic Defender, making it the 2,012,532nd Defender ever built.
The bespoke upgrade work on the Barbour vehicle was carried out at the Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works Facility, at Ryton-in-Dunmore, near Coventry.  It took eight weeks to complete with 14 of the Classic team lovingly working on the bespoke Barbour features including the hood, trim and unique Barbour paint.

Exterior Features

The Barbour Defender takes the very best of Barbour and Land Rover’s heritage and authenticity.  The body colour is distinctive – a specially customised green to reflect the iconic colour of the Barbour Beaufort Wax Jacket.

The vehicle comes with a choice of two removable hoods.  The first is a light sand canvas displaying the Barbour Beacon brand logo, a nod to Barbour’s early heritage.  Built in 1882, the Beacon is a famous North eastern landmark standing proudly at the mouth of the Tyne welcoming generations of mariners into South Shields harbour.

The second canvas is designed in a large scale version of Barbour’s Classic Tartan.  From the very origins of the company, tartan has played an important part in Barbour’s history.  Founder John Barbour was a Scotsman, brought up in Galloway in South West Scotland.
Both hoods are in a 16oz tightly woven canvas, weather resistant and road worthy. A personalised number plate ‘BR08 OUR’ has been especially purchased for this vehicle.
Interior Features
Barbour’s classic tartan has been used in the seat inserts and as a trim to the floor mats. The top of the cubby box has the Barbour for Land Rover logo embossed on to it, signifying the importance of the partnership.
A unique feature is the panel wall in the rear of the vehicle featuring Barbour bellows pockets on the left and a larger pocket wall on the right.  Inspired by the spacious bellows pockets on the Beaufort jacket, they provide plenty of storage space.
The Barbour Defender was completed in June 17 and will be appearing at selected John Lewis stores throughout the Autumn/Winter 17 season.
