Barbour 125 Years: Your Questions
autumn winter 2019
In celebration of 125 years of Barbour and five generations of the Barbour family, we invited our customers and Instagram followers to ask us their questions about Barbour’s 125th anniversary.
“What is the oldest original Barbour?” @alastairnimmons
Answer: The Haydon Wax is one of the earliest examples of a Barbour jacket made from waxed cotton. This very special jacket was first introduced in 1910 and was a very versatile, all-round weather-resistant jacket.
“How did waxing the fabric come along?” @sophie_vdhaegen
Answer: The Barbour story began in 1894 when John Barbour, an entrepreneurial Scotsman from Galloway came across the border and opened the first Barbour store in the marketplace in South Shields, a burgeoning port on the River Tyne in the North East of England. He began by selling oilskins and other garments to protect the growing community of mariners from the worst of the North Sea weather. Soon, this extended to farmers, labourers and shepherds who all earned their living outdoors and by the beginning of the next century, Barbour’s oilskins were well known throughout the UK.
“Do you plan to re-do the old classics? @blena56
“Any vintage inspired anniversary jackets being released?” @pgault106
Answers: The Icons Re-Engineered collection celebrates 125 years of Barbour with a limited edition of iconic jackets for men and women that have featured large in the history of Barbour. Each Icons Re-Engineered piece is inspired by a legendary jacket from the archive that reflects a significant period in Barbour's history and has been updated into a contemporary style that is relevant for today.
