We recently compiled our ultimate Barbour Bucket List for adults with our favourite things to do over the British Summer. With the school holidays fast approaching we’ve now turned our attention to the fun family activities the UK has to offer over the summer months and here are our top 5 picks.
1) Family friendly festivals
Many established UK festivals have child specific zones and campsites while other festivals are completely designed to fit around the family experience. Try out a family festival this summer such as Lollibop, Camp Bestival, Summer Camp or Just So festival. For more information and helpful tips visit www.festivalkidz.com.
2) Quirky camping
When ordinary tents just won’t cut it, we have some suggestions for more quirky camping exploits. Visit the Nethergong Nurseries campsite and let the children explore its Narnia playground. Dare to try a spot of Tree Tent camping at the Secret Campsite in Sussex or burrow away in the Hobbit inspired Huts at the Acorn Camping and Glamping site in Cornwall.
3) Themed nature walks
Now heading down to the 100 acre woods or on a Gruffalo trail is no longer a thing of the imagination. The whole family can head on themed nature walks at many of the countries nature parks. Our favourites include the Winnie the Pooh experience at Ashdown Forest, the Gruffalo Walk at Dean Heritage Centre or the Elf and Fairy Gardens hunt in Wilderness Wood. Find out about walks near you from your local council or nature park
4) Go wild
The closest thing the UK has to offer to rival the African Savanna can be found in the many National Zoo’s, Wildlife Parks and Safari’s. Experts often give daily animal talks and encourage participation in feeding times (depending on the animal of course). Take a look at Visit Britain’s top 10 UK Zoos here.
5) Come rain or shine
Heatwaves are predicted over the summer but Britain wouldn’t be Britain without unpredictable weather so make sure you are covered by planning fun indoor activities. Summer is the season for great kids theatre such as Matilda, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Shrek the Musical and The Lion King being some of London’s West Ends most popular. You could also visit some of the UK’s child friendly museums or exhibitions such as Tate Britain, The Museum of Science and Industry or the National History Museum.
